The honorifics, and why they matter

Getting these wrong is the fastest way to have an uncle call your father. They are not decoration, they encode who is who.

The standard phrases, decoded

  • Sadar Nimantran = a respectful invitation. The most common opening line.
  • Aap sapariwar padharein = please come with your family. Sapariwar is doing a lot of work here, and leaving it out reads as inviting one person.
  • Aapke aashirwad ki abhilasha hai = we desire your blessings. Used when inviting elders, and it is the warmer alternative to a flat request for attendance.
  • Shubh vivah = auspicious marriage. The standard term for the wedding itself.
  • Vivah Muhurat = the ceremony's fixed time. Always print it.
  • Bhojan Vyavastha = meal arrangement. Usually followed by a time.
  • Baraat prasthan = the procession's departure time, printed when the groom's side is travelling.
  • Darshanabhilashi = one who desires your presence. Traditionally signed at the bottom by the host family.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What does Chiranjeevi mean on a wedding card?

It means may you live long, and it is used before the name of the groom or any younger man. Aayushmati is the feminine form, used for the bride.

What does sapariwar mean and why is it important?

It means with your family. Without it, a Hindi invitation reads as inviting one person rather than a household, which is almost never what is intended.

How do we mention a grandparent who has passed away on a Hindi invitation?

Print the name with Swargiya or Pujya Swargiya before it, usually in a blessing line above the couple's names. Leaving them off entirely is read as an omission.

What does darshanabhilashi mean?

One who desires your presence. It is traditionally signed at the bottom of a Hindi invitation by the host family, above the family name.

Should a Hindi invitation be in Devanagari or Roman script?

Devanagari for elders and for the formal sections, and many families print both. A digital invitation can carry both without doubling any cost, which is one of its practical advantages.
