Upanayanam and Janeu invitations: the thread ceremony explained
The thread ceremony marks the point at which a boy formally begins his education in the tradition. It is called Upanayanam in the south, Janeu or Yagnopavit in the north, Munja in Maharashtra, Brataghar in Bengal and Poonool in Tamil Nadu.
Upanayana literally means bringing near, in the sense of bringing the child near to a teacher. It is one of the sixteen samskaras and traditionally the most significant one before marriage.
What the thread actually is
The Yagnopavita is a loop of cotton thread worn over the left shoulder and across the body to the right hip. It has three strands, and the number is deliberate.
The most commonly given explanation is that the three strands represent three debts the wearer takes on: to the teachers who taught him, to the ancestors who preceded him, and to the sages who preserved the knowledge. Another reading gives them as the three gunas, or as body, speech and mind.
The knot joining the strands is called the Brahmagranthi. The thread is replaced periodically, and there is a specific ceremony for changing it, usually on Shravana Purnima.
The ceremony
- Ganesh Puja and PunyahavachanamThe usual opening rites, purifying the space.
- Head shavingIn many families the boy's head is shaved beforehand, or a token cutting is done.
- The thread is placedThe priest and the father place the Yagnopavita over the boy's left shoulder.
- The Gayatri Mantra is taughtThe father whispers the Gayatri Mantra into the boy's ear, traditionally from behind a cloth held over them both so no one else hears. This is the heart of the ceremony.
- BhikshaThe boy, now formally a brahmachari, begs for his first alms. He goes first to his mother, who gives generously, then to other relatives. Everyone present should have something ready to give.
- Kashi YatraAs at a wedding, the boy declares he is leaving for Kashi to study and is persuaded to stay.
- Homam and blessingsThe fire ritual, then blessings from the elders.
Age, timing and practical notes
- Age is traditionally between seven and nine, though many families hold it later, and some hold it just before the wedding when it has not been done earlier.
- Timing is set by a muhurat and is usually in the morning, often starting very early. Say so plainly.
- Length. A full Upanayanam can run three to four hours. Guests should know before they plan the day.
- Food is usually a traditional vegetarian meal, and in many families the boy eats separately as part of the observance.
- Dress. The boy wears a dhoti. Guests are usually expected in traditional dress, and it is worth saying so.
