Bengali wedding invitations: Biye Bari wording and the ritual order
Bengali weddings run on a different clock from most of India. The ceremony itself is usually held late at night, sometimes after eleven, because the auspicious lagna falls then. Guests who are not Bengali routinely arrive at seven expecting the wedding and find dinner instead.
This page walks through the rituals in order, explains the two moments everyone photographs, and gives wording for the invitation.
Saat Paak and Subho Drishti
These two happen back to back and they are the centre of the whole evening.
In Saat Paak, the bride is seated on a low wooden stool called a piri and lifted by her brothers and cousins. She is carried around the groom seven times, with betel leaves held over her face so she cannot see him.
Then comes Subho Drishti, the auspicious first look. The betel leaves come down and the couple look at each other for the first time that evening, in front of everybody. It is the single most photographed second of a Bengali wedding.
Mala Badal follows, the exchange of garlands, usually while the bride is still being held up and her cousins are making it as difficult as possible.
The rituals in order
| Ritual | What happens |
|---|---|
| Aashirbad | Elders from each family formally bless the other's child, with rice and trefoil leaves. |
| Aiburobhaat | The last meal eaten as an unmarried person, at their own home, served on a traditional platter. |
| Dodhi Mongol | At dawn on the wedding day, the couple eats curd and rice, their only meal until the ceremony. |
| Gaye Holud | Turmeric, with the paste used on the groom carried to the bride's house along with her saree. |
| Bor Boron | The groom's arrival, welcomed by the bride's mother with a lamp and sweets. |
| Potto Bastro | The groom is given new clothes and seated for the ceremony. |
| Saat Paak and Subho Drishti | The seven circles and the first look. |
| Mala Badal and Sampradan | Garland exchange, then the bride's guardian formally gives her hand. |
| Sindoor Daan | The groom applies sindoor to the bride's parting, and she is covered with a new saree. |
| Bidaay and Bou Bhaat | The departure, then the reception hosted by the groom's family. |
What to put on the invitation
- The lagna time, clearly. If the ceremony is at 11:40 at night, print it and repeat it.
- When dinner is served, because it is usually well before the ceremony and guests need to know they are not eating afterwards.
- Whether Bou Bhaat is a separate invitation. Confusion here is extremely common.
- The Topor and Mukut are the conical headpieces worn by the groom and bride. If you are choosing artwork, these belong on it.

Questions people actually ask
Why are Bengali weddings held at night?
The auspicious lagna calculated for the wedding usually falls late in the evening or at night, often after eleven. Dinner is therefore served well before the ceremony, not after.
What is Subho Drishti?
The auspicious first look. After the bride has been carried around the groom seven times with betel leaves covering her face, the leaves are lowered and the couple see each other in front of everyone.
What is Saat Paak?
The bride, seated on a low wooden piri, is lifted by her brothers and cousins and carried around the groom seven times before Subho Drishti.
What is Bou Bhaat?
The reception hosted by the groom's family after the wedding, on a separate day. It usually has its own guest list, so make clear on the invitation which functions each guest is invited to.
What is Aiburobhaat?
The last meal eaten as an unmarried person, served at their own home on a traditional platter, usually with all their favourite dishes.
