Mehndi invitations: wording, timings and what the ceremony involves
Mehndi is the henna function, usually held one or two days before the wedding, usually at the bride's side, and usually much longer than anyone plans for.
It is the function that has changed the most in the last twenty years. What used to be women of the family sitting together while the bride was decorated is now, for a lot of families, an evening event with music, food and a full guest list. Both versions are still normal, and your invitation should make clear which one you are having.

How long it really takes
This is the single most useful thing to know when you are planning the day, and it is almost never on the invitation.
Full bridal mehndi, hands and feet, takes four to six hours to apply. The paste then needs six to eight hours on the skin to stain properly, and most artists ask that it not be washed off but scraped, with the hands kept away from water overnight.
In practice this means the bride is sitting still for most of the function, and cannot use her hands for the rest of the evening. Plan food that someone else can feed her, and do not schedule anything immediately after.
The traditions attached to the henna
- The groom's initials are hidden in the design. He is meant to find them, usually on the wedding night, and the search is treated as a game. Some artists hide the full name.
- The darker the stain, the deeper the love. Said about the groom's love, and in many families about the mother in law's affection too. The stain actually depends on the henna quality, how long it stays on and body heat, but nobody wants to hear that on the day.
- The bride does not do housework until the mehndi fades. A gentle joke in most families now, and originally a small protected period of rest.
- Henna is cooling. The practical reading, and the reason it appears at summer functions and in hot climates generally. It is also said to calm nerves before the wedding.
Quiet version or party version
Decide this before you word the invitation, because the two need completely different information on them.
The intimate version is family and close friends, held at home, in the afternoon, no dress code, and the invitation can be a message. Guests need the address and a rough time.
The event version is held at a venue, in the evening, often merged with the Sangeet, with a colour theme, food and music. Guests need a start time they will be held to, a venue with a map, and the dress code stated plainly, because green and yellow themes are common and people will ask.

What to put on a Mehndi invitation
- The start time, and be honest about it. Mehndi functions notoriously drift.
- Whether mehndi will be available for guests, because they will plan their evening around the answer.
- The dress code if there is one. Green, yellow and orange themes are common.
- The venue with a map link if it is not the family home.
- Whether food is a full dinner or snacks. This decides whether people eat before coming.

Questions people actually ask
How many days before the wedding is the Mehndi?
Usually one or two days before. Two days is kinder, because it gives the stain time to darken and the bride time to use her hands again.
How long does bridal mehndi take?
Four to six hours to apply for full hands and feet, then six to eight hours on the skin before it is scraped off. Guests with simpler designs need fifteen to forty minutes each.
Is the groom's name really hidden in the design?
Yes, it is a genuine and very common tradition. The initials or the full name are worked into the pattern and the groom is meant to find them.
Should the Mehndi and Sangeet be combined?
Many families do, and it saves a day and a venue. The drawback is that the bride cannot use her hands during the Sangeet, so if dancing matters to her, keep them separate.
What is a safe henna to use?
Natural henna, which stains orange first and deepens over one to two days. Avoid anything that goes black within the hour, as that usually means PPD, which causes serious skin reactions.
