Sangeet Invitation

Sangeet invitations: what to write and how the evening is usually run

Sangeet is the music night. It started as a Punjabi and North Indian custom where the women of both families sat with a dholak and sang folk songs, many of them teasing the other family, and it has since spread to almost every Indian wedding regardless of region.

The modern version is a performance evening. Cousins rehearse for weeks, there is a running order, and somebody's father does something unexpected.

This page covers how the evening is actually structured, how long it should run, and wording for the invitation.

How the evening is usually run

Almost every Sangeet that goes well follows some version of this order. The ones that go badly are the ones with no order at all.

  1. Guests arrive and eat somethingStarters and drinks for the first forty five minutes or so. Nobody performs to a hungry, half arrived room.
  2. A short welcomeUsually a sibling or a close friend, two minutes, introducing both families.
  3. The elders go firstAunts and the older generation, often the traditional folk songs. This is the part that will matter to people in ten years.
  4. The cousins and friendsThe choreographed section. This is where an evening either stays tight or falls apart.
  5. The couple's performanceIf they are doing one. Placed late, because everything after it is an anticlimax.
  6. The floor opensThe DJ takes over and the actual party starts. Everything above should be finished before this.

Who hosts it, and where it sits

Traditionally the bride's family hosted the Sangeet, since the songs were sung by her side. In practice today it is very often a joint function, held at a venue, with both families sharing the cost and the running order. If your two families have different assumptions about this, settle it early, because it decides who the invitation comes from.

In the schedule it usually sits one to three days before the wedding, in the evening. Families short on days merge it with the Mehndi, which works, with one caveat covered on the Mehndi page: the bride cannot use her hands.

What to put on a Sangeet invitation

  • A start time, and be realistic. If the room fills at eight, do not print seven.
  • The dress code. Sangeet is the function where people most want to know, and Indo western is a common answer that needs saying out loud.
  • Whether dinner is served, and roughly when.
  • The venue with a map link.
  • If you want performances from guests, say so on the invitation and give them a deadline to tell you. Asking on the night gets you nothing.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Who hosts the Sangeet, the bride's side or the groom's?

Traditionally the bride's family, since the songs came from her side. Today it is very often a joint function with both families sharing the cost. Agree it early, because it decides whose name the invitation carries.

How long should a Sangeet run?

Three to four hours in total, with the performance section no longer than about ninety minutes. Cap performances at ten to twelve and hold each to three minutes.

Can the Sangeet and Mehndi be on the same evening?

Yes, and many families do it to save a day. The one real drawback is that the bride's henna will still be drying, so she cannot use her hands or dance freely.

What is the dress code for a Sangeet?

Whatever you state on the invitation. Indo western is the most common answer, and it needs to be said explicitly or guests will not know how formal to go.

Is a Sangeet only a Punjabi tradition?

It began as a North Indian and Punjabi custom but it is now held at weddings across almost every Indian community, including South Indian and Muslim weddings, usually under the same name.
