Save the date: when to send it, what to put on it, and what to leave off
A save the date does one job. It tells people to block a date so they do not book something else. That is all. Everything else can wait for the invitation.
The mistake almost everyone makes is putting too much on it, which creates confusion about whether the invitation has already been sent.
When to send it

What goes on it, and what does not
- Include: your names, the date, the city, and the words invitation to follow.
- Include if it is a destination wedding: a rough idea of how many days, so guests can plan leave.
- Leave off: the full venue address, which may still change.
- Leave off: RSVP details. You are not asking for a reply yet.
- Leave off: the full schedule of functions. That is the invitation's job.
- Leave off: gift or registry information entirely.
Who should get one
Only people who are definitely invited. This sounds obvious and it is the most common mistake made with save the dates.
A save the date is a commitment. Once somebody has one, you cannot quietly leave them off the invitation list later without it being noticed and remembered. Guest lists shrink far more often than they grow, usually when the venue capacity becomes real.
So send it to your certain list only, and leave the maybes for the invitation itself. It is much easier to add people later than to remove them.
