Assamese Wedding Invitation

Assamese wedding invitations: Juron, Biya, and what to write

Assamese weddings are noticeably simpler than most Indian weddings, and that is deliberate rather than a matter of budget. The rituals are fewer, the guest lists are usually smaller, and the emphasis sits on the two families rather than on spectacle.

One ceremony carries most of the emotional weight, and it happens before the wedding day.

Juron, the ceremony that matters most

Juron is when the groom's mother visits the bride at her home, usually a day or two before the wedding, and formally accepts her.

She brings the bride's wedding clothes, jewellery, and traditionally a fish and other items, and she applies sindoor to the bride's parting herself. Then she gives her a mirror, in which the bride looks at herself for the first time as the woman who will marry her son.

It is an unusual arrangement compared with most Indian traditions, where sindoor comes from the groom during the ceremony. In Assam it comes from his mother, before the wedding, and the meaning is about the bride being received into a family rather than given away from one.

The rituals in order

RitualWhat happens
JuronThe groom's mother visits the bride with her wedding clothes and jewellery, and applies sindoor.
Tel DiyaOil is applied to the bride and groom at their own homes, similar to a haldi in intent.
Nuoni or SnanThe ceremonial bath, with turmeric, after which the couple wears new clothes.
Daiyan DiyaCurd is offered, and elders bless the couple.
BiyaThe main ceremony, usually held at night, with the sacred fire, the vows and the circling.
KhastraThe couple is welcomed at the groom's home, with games and rituals to break the ice.

What to put on the invitation

  • The ceremony time, since Assamese weddings are usually held at night.
  • When the meal is served, which is typically well before the ceremony.
  • Whether Juron is a separate invitation. It is a smaller, more intimate gathering and often is.
  • Both the Assamese and Gregorian date, if your family follows the Assamese calendar.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What is the Juron ceremony?

The groom's mother visits the bride at her home before the wedding, brings her wedding clothes and jewellery, and applies sindoor to her parting herself. It is about the bride being received into a family.

Why does the groom's mother apply the sindoor?

In Assamese tradition the sindoor comes from the mother in law at Juron, before the wedding, rather than from the groom during the ceremony as in most other Indian traditions.

When is an Assamese wedding held?

Usually at night, with the meal served well before the ceremony. State both times clearly on the invitation.

What does an Assamese bride wear?

A Mekhela Chador, most often in Muga silk, the golden silk unique to Assam. It is the detail that makes invitation artwork look genuinely Assamese.

Are Assamese weddings simpler than other Indian weddings?

Generally yes, and deliberately so. There are fewer rituals and the emphasis is on the two families rather than on scale.
