Odia wedding invitations: the first card goes to Jagannath

Odia weddings have one custom that no other Indian tradition has quite the same way. Before a single card goes to a single guest, the first invitation is offered to Lord Jagannath.

The ceremony is called Jayee Anukolo, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. This page covers it, the rest of the sequence, and wording for the invitation.

Jayee Anukolo, the first invitation

The wedding invitation is taken to the temple and formally offered to Lord Jagannath before anyone else receives one. Many families travel to Puri for it. Others offer it at their local Jagannath temple or before the family deity at home.

The reasoning is simple and quite beautiful: the deity is the first guest, and the family is asking for his presence before asking for anyone else's.

It matters practically too. It means the invitation has to be finalised and printed earlier than families expect, because nothing can be distributed until this is done. If you are working to a tight timeline, build this in.

The rituals in order

RitualWhat happens
NirbandhaThe formal engagement, held at the groom's home. The fathers exchange promises before the family deity, which is what makes it binding.

Baadua Pani GadhuaThe ceremonial bath, with water fetched by relatives.
Kanyadaan and HastagranthiThe giving of the bride, and the joining of hands.

What to put on the invitation

  • The lagna time. Odia weddings, like Bengali ones, are frequently held late at night.
  • When dinner is served, since it is usually well before the ceremony.
  • Whether guests are invited to the Nirbandha, which is a separate event at the groom's home with a much smaller list.
  • Whether there is a reception, and on which day.
