Kerala wedding invitations: why the ceremony is so short, and what to write
A Kerala Hindu wedding ceremony often takes fifteen to twenty minutes. Not fifteen minutes for one ritual, fifteen minutes for the whole thing. Guests from North India regularly assume something has gone wrong.
Nothing has. The tradition is deliberately spare, and what it saves on ceremony it puts into the Sadya afterwards, which is the part everybody actually remembers.

The ceremony, in the twenty minutes it takes
- The couple is seated at the mandapamUsually at an auditorium or a temple, at the muhurtham.
- ThalikettuThe groom ties the thali, a small leaf shaped gold pendant on a yellow thread, around the bride's neck. In many families his sister ties the final knot.
- PudavakodaThe groom presents the bride with a Pudava, a new saree, which she accepts in front of everyone.
- KanyadanamThe bride's father places her hand in the groom's.
- Three roundsThe couple circles the mandapam three times, not seven.
- Blessings and riceElders shower the couple with rice, and it is done.
The Sadya is not an afterthought
The Sadya is a vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf, traditionally twenty four to twenty eight items, eaten with the hands, in a fixed order, with each item in a fixed position on the leaf.
Rice goes in the middle. Pickles and thoran and olan and avial go along the top edge in an order people will correct you on. Payasam comes at the end, sometimes two or three kinds, and it is poured onto the leaf and mixed with the fingers.
For a Kerala wedding, allow the Sadya as much time and as much of your budget as the ceremony, because for most guests it is the main event. Say on the invitation when it is served, since seating is usually in batches.

Why is a Kerala Hindu wedding so short?
The tradition is deliberately spare. A Nair ceremony is usually fifteen to twenty minutes, consisting of the Thalikettu, Pudavakoda, Kanyadanam and three rounds of the mandapam. Namboodiri weddings are longer and include Vedic fire rites.
What is Thalikettu?
