Kannada wedding invitations: Dhare Eradu, the rituals, and what to write

Kannada weddings sit between the Tamil and Telugu traditions and share a lot with both, but they have one ritual entirely their own, and it is the one the whole ceremony is named around.

This page covers Dhare Eradu, the rest of the sequence, the difference between the major Karnataka communities, and wording for the invitation.

Dhare Eradu, the pouring

Dhare means a continuous stream. In Dhare Eradu, the bride's parents pour water over the couple's joined hands, in an unbroken flow, while the mantras are said.

The bride's hand is placed in the groom's, a coconut and betel leaves are held above, and the water runs over all of it. The unbroken stream is the point. It is a giving that cannot be taken back, and it is the moment the bride's family formally completes the Kanyadana.

In many Karnataka families this, rather than the tying of the mangalsutra, is spoken of as the heart of the wedding.

The rituals in order

RitualWhat happens
Nischay TamulamThe engagement. Betel leaves and nuts are exchanged and the wedding date is fixed.
NaandiA puja at both homes seeking the blessing of the family deity before the wedding days begin.
Kashi YatraThe groom's mock departure for Kashi, and his return.
Var PujaThe bride's family formally receives and honours the groom at the mandap.
Mala BadaluGarland exchange, usually with both being lifted by cousins.
Dhare EraduThe pouring of water over the couple's joined hands.
Mangalsutra DharaneThe mangalsutra is tied at the muhurtham.
SaptapadiSeven steps around the fire, each with a vow.
Okhli and NamingGames at the groom's home, and in many families the bride is given a new name by her in laws.

What to put on the invitation

  • The muhurtha time, which is usually morning and frequently early.
  • The Devarakarya or Naandi, if relatives are invited to it separately.
  • Whether the reception is before or after. Both are done in Karnataka.
  • The meal, since a full traditional lunch served on a banana leaf takes time and guests plan around it.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

What is Dhare Eradu?

The bride's parents pour water in an unbroken stream over the couple's joined hands while mantras are recited. The unbroken flow is the point, and it completes the Kanyadana. Many Karnataka families consider it the heart of the wedding.

How is a Kannada wedding different from a Tamil or Telugu one?

It shares Kashi Yatra and the mangalsutra with both, but Dhare Eradu is distinctly Kannada. Telugu weddings centre on Jeelakarra Bellam and Tamil weddings on the Oonjal and the thali tying.

Do all Karnataka communities follow the same rituals?

No. Kannada Brahmin, Lingayat, Vokkaliga and coastal Bunt weddings differ significantly, and the Bunt tradition is matrilineal with its own sequence. Ask your elders.

Is the bride given a new name?

In many Kannada families yes, at a small ceremony after she arrives at her in laws' home. It is far less common now than it once was.

Is the reception before or after the wedding?

Both are done in Karnataka. State it clearly on the invitation with its own date and time, since guests from elsewhere will assume it is after.
