Telugu wedding invitations: Jeelakarra Bellam, the muhurtham, and what to write
A Telugu wedding invitation is called a Shubhalekha, and the ceremony it announces is built around one very specific moment that has no real equivalent anywhere else in India.
That moment is Jeelakarra Bellam, and if you understand nothing else about a Telugu wedding, understand that one. This page covers it, the rest of the sequence, and wording for the invitation.
Jeelakarra Bellam, and why it is the whole point
At the muhurtham, the couple is given a paste of jeelakarra, cumin, and bellam, jaggery. They place it on each other's heads and hold it there while the mantras are recited.
Cumin is bitter. Jaggery is sweet. Pressed together on the head at the exact auspicious moment, the meaning is direct: you are choosing to stay bound through what is bitter and what is sweet, and neither of you gets to pick which arrives.
This is the moment of marriage in a Telugu wedding, and it happens with the couple still separated by a curtain, the Tera, which is only lowered afterwards. Guests who arrive late miss it entirely, so the invitation should push the timing hard.
The rituals in order

What to put on a Shubhalekha
- The muhurtham in large type, and the fact that it may be before sunrise.
- Whether breakfast follows, because for a dawn muhurtham the guests will not have eaten.
- The reception, if it is a separate day. In many Telugu families it is the evening before, not after.
- Both the Telugu and Gregorian dates, if your family follows the panchangam closely.
- A line asking guests to be seated before the muhurtham, because Jeelakarra Bellam is not repeated for latecomers.
